Introduction Thompson Pharmacy and Drug Store is a local pharmacy and drugstore located in North-Central Vancouver. The store has been in operation since 2005. Over the years, the store has run into financial downfall and has been trying to find other avenues to increase profitability. The store’s owner and manager Mr. Thompson, aged 38, believes he should convert his dispensary into a Medical Cannabis dispensary and stop all other pharmacy operations. Mr. Thompson who is himself a frequent cannabis user believes the sale of medical marijuana is only going to increase and with legalisation of marijuana for personal use just around the corner, this industry is poised for a financial boom in the coming years. The current business operations provide for very less margins as the store has a high inventory holding cost. The annual script count is under 20,000 scripts and the area in which the store is located has relatively less little traffic. As the annual script count is low (That is 55 per day – is that low?) and there is a low footfall in the pharmacy, the bargaining power of Mr. Thompson is low and he is unable to negotiate a better supply agreement from his suppliers. This is the main reason Mr. Thompson is unable to bring down inventory costs and has lower commission and margins. Also, there is relatively less scope for increasing footfall as there are no medical centres or doctor’s clinics nearby. Is footfall the right term? A friend of Mr. Thompson who grows and uses marijuana recreationally, recently approached him and offered to partner with him in the new venture.
